bloody brain shooter

Channel your inner mad scientist with this Bloody Brain Shooter. Mixing acidic lime juice and Irish cream causes the cream to curdle, creating brain-like strands in the shot.

Ingredients:

1 1/4 oz. strawberry vodka such as Stoli
1/8 oz. Rose’s lime juice
3/4 oz. Bailey’s Irish Cream
Splash of grenadine

Preparation:

Chill vodka for better smoothness. Add vodka and lime juice to a shaker, shake and strain into a shot glass. Using a straw, dip some Bailey’s Irish Cream into the shot. Once you submerge the straw into the Bailey’s put your finger on top of the straw to hold the Bailey’s in the straw. Dip the straw tip into the vodka and slowly release your top finger. The Bailey’s will curdle a little bit due to the lime juice and you should be able to make strands of Bailey’s.

Repeat the straw/Bailey’s process to build a “brain” in the shot glass. Add a splash of grenadine to the concoction to add the ‘blood’ to the mix. Down the hatch as a shot. (via)

The Ajax.org Team has finally unveiled Cloud9, their much anticpated IDE-in-the-sky. Cloud9 runs on a stack of Node.js, HTML5, and their own Ajax.org frameworks which Ruben and Rik discussed in Episode 0.1.6.

Features

Although an early alpha, Cloud9 looks polished and includes a number of cool features:

Easy hackability for Javascript developers

At least as good as existing IDE’s and text editors with help from the latest browsers

Local and remote file and repository integration

Debugging support for Chrome / NodeJS

Test and deploy your code in the cloud

To kick the tires yourself, you’ll need Node.js installed. You can then clone the repo and run the install script for your version:
$ bin/cloud9-osx64
$ bin/cloud9-lin32
> bin\cloud9-win32.bat
On the Mac, the script automatically starts the server and opens Cloud9 at http://localhost:3000.

umbrUI is a demo of input checkbox elements made with CSS3. There was a request, so I tried. First I thought to create a div with 2 buttons inside, but acutally, when you think about it.. a switch has an on and off state, so why not use a checkbox input element. And as it turnes out, it worked out pretty good.

For the above switches no JavaScript, images or extra markup is needed. Just a normal and custom data attributes to add the Pictos Font icons, like this:

The rest is all CSS3. The main input element is mainly just the black background. Then the :before is used for the left part und the :after for the right one. The Pictos Icons get injected trough content:attr(data-icon-left);. For the 3Dish perspective a transform:rotateY is used, but unfortunately for now, only Safari can render it correctly. Then of course a lot of gradients, box-shadows, text-shadows. To have the on/off states, you can use the pseudo class :checked to give it a different style. A small detail if you look closely.. there is a real reflection of the active blue icon applied with box-reflect.

Technologies like Websockets lead us to rethink how we construct our web applications. Model-View-Controller (MVC)-based frameworks have encouraged us to chunk up markup into templates that are served up in response to controller actions. Different approaches for updating application views are emerging as browser clients take on more and more responsibilities.

For Node.js applications, LearnBoost has released Nodestream which adds realtime template updating to your application. Take the following Express application snippet and Jade template:

Nodestream allows your templates to get updated in realtime with Socket.io using Websockets and JavaScript with only a couple of changes.

Usage

First we need to notify Nodestream of an update, emitting a newitem event when we save an item to the database:

    nodestream.emit('newitem', item)
}
… and then hook into that even in our template:
:realtime(append: 'newitem', local: 'items', obj: 'item')

Now our views are updated after new items are add, even in multiple tabs! Awesome.
